Coping When Domestic Violence and Abuse Enters the Workplace

Since COVID, incidents of domestic violence and family abuse have increased. Although it’s challenging to attain accurate statistics, in New York City since the lockdown calls to domestic violence hotlines increased by 300% and domestic violence cases increased by 49%. It has been a very challenging time for our victims and their children. According to the CDC (Center for Disease Control,) one in 4 women and one in 10 men experience Domestic violence prior to COVID. This violence can take various forms: physical, emotional, sexual, or psychological. The Department of Labor reports that victims of domestic violence lose nearly 8 million days of paid work per year in the U.S., resulting in a $1.8 billion loss in productivity for employers.
The pervasiveness and severity of domestic violence impacting the workplace demands the attention of employers, managers, human resources and security staff.
